RIP Harvey Pekar

Harvey Pekar, the creator of American Splendor, has passed away.

I never was a follower of his work, but he was one of the trailblazers of independent, autobiographical comics. He did comics because he loved them, not so he can get movie deals (though he did get one eventually), and he never treated it as just a job.

As cartoonist Phil Hester noted on his Twitter, the best way to honor Harvey Pekar today is to create comics for yourself.

Rest in peace, Mr. Pekar.

The strange thing is, I just watched his movie last week. I never read his work either, but did share a deep respect for the story that a comic could tell.
