Spider-Rama: Marvel Team-Up #3

Welcome to Spider-Rama! Every Monday and Wednesday, Ben and Duy will look at a Spider-Man issue from the very beginning, in chronological order, and answer questions for various categories, inspired in large part by one of our favorite podcasts, The Rewatchables by The Ringer. Our goal is to make it to Amazing Spider-Man #200. Will we make it? Grab your Amazing Spider-Man Omnibus or crank up your tablet to Marvel Unlimited, and then tune in every Wednesday to find out!

by Gerry Conway, Ross Andru, and Frank Giacoia

Spider-Man and the Human Torch fight... (sigh) Morbius.

BEN: Ross Andru was inked by Giacoia this time, and it’s much closer to what I expect from Andru. Perfectly competent house style superhero art from the ‘70s. That’s not a dig either, I like Andru’s art.

DUY: To be honest, the art looks kinda Kane-like. Ross Andru has been inked by three different people at this point, and they all look different. Inkers are important, people.

BEN: Chasing Amy did so much damage.

BEN: The Human Torch just conveniently knows who Morbius is because of stories Spider-Man told him. Normally I’d groan at such convenient storytelling, but I actually think that would be Spider-Man’s top crazy story to share with others. ”Dude, I totally grew four extra arms and fought a vampire last month.”

DUY: I love that Peter told Johnny that story, because it implies that they just started randomly hanging out off screen.

BEN: Sadly, it is still easy to misdirect the hate of a crowd onto people that don’t deserve it.

DUY: Misplaced hate, sadly always relevant.

BEN: Despite the presence of Morbius, I feel the pacing is better in this issue.

DUY: This is way too soon for Morbius to be returning.

BEN: Morbius always ages the worst, but I do like the subplot of the Bolt brothers.

DUY: I get the feeling Conway wanted to go deeper with the racism stuff in this issue and was held back.

BEN: Or was too inexperienced.

DUY: I'm not a big stickler for continuity or anything, but this is way more than " a couple 'a weeks."

BEN: I’m going to need to see a detailed analysis of how many definitive days and nights have been shown in the comics since.

DUY: I love how unnecessarily melodramatic this is:

BEN: They’re basically the best friend either of them has, but default to fighting every time.

BEN: Morbius, for continuing to appear despite being so obviously terrible.

DUY: That professor who calmly told two superheroes to calm the hell down..

BEN: Not only told them to calm down, but made them wait for him to finish his lecture.

DUY: That's it for Spider-Rama today.

BEN: Thank you, Stan Lee and Steve Ditko—

DUY: —for telling us we aren't the only ones.
