Spider-Rama: Amazing Spider-Man #106

Welcome to Spider-Rama! Every weekday until the end of May, Ben and Duy will look at a Spider-Man issue from the very beginning, in chronological order, and answer questions for various categories, inspired in large part by one of our favorite podcasts, The Rewatchables by The Ringer. Our goal is to make it to Amazing Spider-Man #200. Will we make it? Grab your Amazing Spider-Man Omnibus or crank up your tablet to Marvel Unlimited, and then tune in every Wednesday to find out!

by Stan Lee, John Romita Sr., and Frank Giacoia

DUY: John Romita returns as the artist.

BEN: Is this the first time he’s told Gwen he loves her?

DUY: I think it is the first time he's mentioned he loves Gwen, but I assume it's happened offscreen.

BEN: This is a good plan by Peter, for once. I've always thought just because you see Peter's face doesn't mean you know who he is.

DUY: I was gonna nitpick that Peter is all of a sudden a good enough craftsman that he was able to make an accurate mask of his face, then I remembered he sewed his own costume.

BEN: I’ve seen this cover on some merchandise before, so that aged well.

DUY: I'm gonna say the whole concern about privacy and spying technology has aged well. Unfortunately.

BEN: But... you’re not a spider.

DUY:  Do modern comics still do the shorthand, "Everyone who is this ugly is a villain" thing?

BEN: Not since Hiddleston.

Scanners everywhere seems like it could be the kind of thing you don’t notice, until you do notice, but I’m still calling nitpick.

DUY: Okay, you mentioned in the last one that his spider-sense should have warned him not to unmask, and I said a camera is technically not a danger. But this issue starts out with his spider-sense going off because of the camera, so none of all that makes sense.

BEN: I’d bet money someone pointed out his spider sense not going off to Stan in between issues

BEN: For some reason this drawing screams Spider-Man to me. It has all the classic Romita elements.

DUY: Sometimes we find common causes:

DUY: Gwen Stacy.

BEN: Always Gwen Stacy.

DUY: That's it for Spider-Rama this week.

BEN: Thank you, Stan Lee and Steve Ditko—

DUY: —for telling us we aren't the only ones.
